Collectors Auctions

A Selection of Hornby‘0’Gauge recently sold

On Saturday 28th February we held our first specialist Collectors auction of 2009. With a higher than usual entry, the interest generated was keen and from far and wide. The highlights were among the collectable toy section, with a rare French 1920's Alfa Romeo P2 clockwork car selling for £3,900 against a £2,000 - 3,000 estimate. A live steam Gauge 1 Bassett Lowke locomotive and tender sold for £2,000 and a tinplate Motorcycle and sidecar made by the German firm of Tipco in the 1930's surprised all by eventually selling for £1,600 against quite modest hopes. This had only been discovered very recently in a local attic, and was consigned only a couple of days prior to the sale. Another early and rare survival was a circa 1900 French clockwork Daschund, with a chamois leather exterior, whose mechanism made the dog walk. This was estimated at £200-300 and eventually sold to one of five telephone bidders for £500.

In other areas of the sale, there was tremendous interest in the numerous train sets, many of which were Hornby. This interest mostly came from local collectors keen to add to their existing model railways. Most sets raised between £80 and £200 however a rare Hornby 00 gauge boxed Terminal surprised all at £440.

A fascinating postcard collection caused a bidding frenzy between several

collectors, and sold for £900 against cautious pre-sale hopes of £100-150.
